DIY Farmhouse Open Shelving in the Guest Bathroom

Ever since we installed open shelving in the She Shed (see that post here), I have been hooked! I love the look and it’s basically like adding a decor feature your walls because you get to decorate them any way you want.

The best part about these shelves is how easy they are to build! I measured, cut, stained and assembled these shelves myself. My husband helped me hang them because I needed an extra set of hands to level them. But if a 34 week pregnant lady can do this project then so can you!

Another great thing about this project is how short the supplies list is!

I purchased 1×6 boards from Home Depot to create the shelves. My store had them priced at $9.37 per board and I needed only one to create all 3 shelves.

I found these brackets on Amazon and they are amazing quality! They even come with all of the hardware needed to assemble and hang the finished shelves.

For the stain I used my current favorite, Farmhouse Stain by Old Barn Milk Paint.

To build the shelves, I cut the board into 30 inch lengths and then sanded them down to be smooth. My biggest learning experience from the last time I built these is to stain them before hanging them. It’s much easier to get the stain to be even when you do this before hanging. I use an old tee shirt to stain and it works great to really rub it in evenly without heavy spots. After the stain dried, I assembled the shelf brackets onto my boards. I already had my studs marked and measured on my wall so I could easily assemble the shelf before needing to hang the brackets.

And lastly, we hung the shelves! We used a level to make sure we were straight and then screwed directly into our studs. I marked them to be right above my toilet and thankfully I had two studs in the right spots for these.

Decorating, of course, is the most fun and getting to change the shelves out for the seasons will be something to look forward to!
